Comfort food at its best, meatloaf is definitely an American staple. An oldie but goodie, that everyone of all ages enjoys to eat. While in college, I was looking for a cheap and easy meal to make that would give the appearance that I was a seasoned cook. It definitely worked since I was asked by my roommate to make this on a regular basis. Having the majority of the ingredients in my pantry and fridge was an added bonus. I personally feel that you can’t have meatloaf without fried onions and not seeing this included in recipes I’ve seen has truly hurt my heart. Either you’re all the way in or your out. 😉
While at Ross today, I saw the Perfect Meatloaf Pan Set that I’ve seen infomercials for these past few months. It was $9.99 so I thought it would be a great product to review. I do feel that it did everything it said, with my favorite part draining the fat to the bottom of the loaf pan since the tray is elevated. That alone sold me on the product. A few recipes listed in the booklet that came with the set did peak my interest to try. I will keep you guys posted.
Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds of ground beef
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon Worcestershire
2 teaspoons Grey Poupon
3 tablespoons ketchup
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped red pepper
1/4 cup bread crumbs
1 cup fried onions (crushed)
1 egg
Topping
1 cup tomato sauce
2 – 3 teaspoons brown sugar
Heat oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, mix the ground beef, salt, pepper, garlic powder, Worcestershire, Grey Poupon, ketchup, onion, red pepper, bread crumbs and egg. Pack this mixture into a baking dish and mold the shape of the meatloaf. Form a crust similar to a pie by pushing up the meat allowing you to pour your tomato sauce without spilling over. The attached video below will illustrate this. Cook the meatloaf for 35 minutes add in the fried onions the last 15 minutes to prevent burning. In all, the cooking time will be 50 minutes.
I have a chocolate infused balsamic vinegar that I use in my meatloaf and chilli. It is beyond delicious. Gives it a mole base kind of feel. You should give a try. I will send you some if you can’t find it.
Artisano’s is the name of the family-owned business here in Indy. I am not sure if they ship, but they have the best infused olive oils and balsamic vinegar (i.e. blood orange is another fav).
I have seen recipes putting cocoa powder in chili. I’m going to have to look up the company. Thanks for letting me know!
Very good recipes for meat loaf especially for us who have acid reflex
I bought the perfect meat loaf pan and I lost my book that came with it. Where can I buy just the book?
